Commemorating Change: The Closure of Manitoba Developmental Centre and the Path to Inclusion

Yesterday, we took a moment to reflect on a significant milestone in Manitoba’s history: the official closure of the Manitoba Developmental Centre (MDC) after over a century of service. During a ceremony led by Minister Nahanni Fontaine at the Manitoba Legislative Building, a plaque was unveiled to commemorate this historic occasion. This plaque will be placed at the MDC cemetery to honor and remember those who resided there.

Epic Opportunities was honored to participate in this meaningful celebration and expresses our sincere gratitude to Minister Fontaine for her leadership and heartfelt apology to the survivors of the MDC and their families for the trauma they endured. Acknowledging this pain is essential for paving the way for healing and progress. This closure marks a significant advancement in supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities in inclusive, community-based environments, reminding us that we have the responsibility to make a difference. We appreciate the collaboration and dedication that made this possible and celebrate the rights and dignity of all people.
