Epic Opportunities works alongside families and individuals who are passionate about sharing their homes with adults with intellectual disabilities. The living experience, also known as Home Share, is designed to provide individualized care in a nurturing, safe and stable home environment, promoting growth and encouraging personal choice and opportunity.

Who can be a Supportive Roommate?

Supportive Roommates bring a vibrant mix of cultural backgrounds and family dynamics. Whether you’re an individual, a couple, with kids or without, and living in the Winnipeg area, you can make a meaningful impact. Epic Opportunities seeks unique qualities in prospective Supportive Roommates to ensure a meaningful Home Share experience. As a Supportive Roommate it is important that you:

  • Welcome and provide a nurturing home environment to an adult living with an intellectual or developmental disability, assisting them to make informed decisions and encouraging choice and decision-making.
  • Dedicate time to building a personal connection, attend appointments together, and encourage involvement in community activities.
  • Assist with daily care routines, ensuring a balanced lifestyle that includes work, personal time, leisure, social, and spiritual activities.
  • Help individuals access inclusive community resources (e.g. medical, psychological, educational, etc.)
  • Support the development of life skills to increase independence.
  • Monitor and administer medications, schedule and attend medical appointments.
  • Encourage self-advocacy and advocate on behalf of the individual when needed.
  • Foster relationships with family, friends, and personal advocates.
  • Work collaboratively with the coordinator, support network, and community members, ensuring effective communication.
  • Meet all licensing regulations and guidelines, which may involve necessary accessibility and environmental considerations in the home, and securing the necessary checks and certifications.

How do I Become a Supportive Roommate?

Prospective Supportive Roommates will undergo an in-depth application process that includes:

  • Home Share application
  • Reference checks
  • Child Abuse Registry, Adult Abuse Registry, and Criminal Record check with Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Home Study Report (which includes a Personal History questionnaire)
  • Emergency First Aid
  • In-home interviews, home visits and a home inspection
